Scripture Reading
1 John 4:11
11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.
Luke 19:1–10
19 Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.
5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man[a] came to seek and save those who are lost.”
Reflection
John’s application is simple: because God has loved us, we must love one another.
God did not wait for us to deserve His love. He loved us while we were still sinners. Jesus showed this kind of love when He approached Zacchaeus, a hated tax collector, not with condemnation but with grace. That love changed Zacchaeus’ heart and led him to repentance.
We are not called to point fingers first. We are called to let the love of God radiate through us. Love walks the long road with people. Love shows grace before people deserve it. Love reflects the heart of Jesus.
Reflection Questions
Who am I tempted to withhold love from because I feel they do not deserve it?
Do I lead with judgment or with the love of Christ?
Who might God be calling me to walk patiently with?
How can I reflect the love of Jesus in a practical way this week?
Prayer
Father, since You have loved me so generously, help me love others with that same grace. Teach me not to love only those who are easy to love, but to reflect Your heart toward those who are difficult, broken, or far from You. Let Your love radiate through my words, actions, patience, and presence. Amen.
