Scripture Reading
1 John 4:19
We love because he first loved us.
Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Reflection
John gives us the foundation of the Christian life in four simple words: God loved us first.
Our relationship with God did not begin because we were searching for Him, improving ourselves, or becoming worthy of His attention. Before we ever responded to Him, He had already taken the initiative. His love is the cause; our love is the response.
That means you do not have to earn God’s affection today. You are invited to receive it, rest in it, and allow it to awaken love within you.
Reflection Questions
Do I think of God’s love as something I must earn?
What makes it difficult for me to believe that God loved me first?
How does the cross prove that God’s love is not based on my performance?
What would change if I began today by receiving God’s love rather than trying to impress Him?
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me before I ever knew how to love You. Thank You that Your love is not a reward for my performance, but a gift of grace. Help me receive Your love more deeply today and let my response be gratitude, trust, and worship. Amen.
