“Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”
Reflection
John says that faith is the victory that overcomes the world, and Paul gives us a vivid picture of that faith when he calls it a shield.
In ancient battle, shields were not only used for individual protection. Soldiers could stand together and overlap them, forming a stronger defense than any one person could create alone.
That is a powerful picture of Christian community.
Faith was never meant to be practiced in isolation. There are seasons when fear, temptation, discouragement, or lies feel too heavy to carry by ourselves. In those moments, we need people who will stand beside us, remind us of what is true, pray with us, and help us keep moving forward.
Sometimes faith means standing strong. Other times, it means admitting that we are tired and allowing someone else to stand with us.
Reflection Questions
What lies, fears, or temptations have been attacking my faith recently?
Am I trying to fight something alone that I should share with another believer?
Who are the people in my life who help strengthen my faith?
Is there someone God may be asking me to encourage or stand beside right now?
Prayer
Father, thank You that You have not called me to follow Jesus alone. Give me humility to ask for help when my faith feels weak and courage to be honest about the battles I am facing. Surround me with brothers and sisters who will stand with me in faith, and show me where You are calling me to stand beside someone else. Help us lock shields together and continue following Jesus with courage and perseverance. Amen.
