1 John 5:1–5
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
Reflection
John begins with belief. Victory doesn't begin with becoming stronger, trying harder, or getting our lives under control. It begins with Jesus.
When Jesus spoke with Nicodemus, He told a deeply religious and moral man that he still needed to be “born again.” New life isn't something we accomplish through our own effort; it is something we receive from God. The invitation is to surrender and allow the Spirit to give us new life and new eyes to see God's Kingdom around us.
Reflection Questions
Do I genuinely trust Jesus, or am I depending on my own goodness, effort, knowledge, or religious activity?
What might I need to surrender in order to more fully trust Jesus?
Where might God be at work around me that I have been too distracted, fearful, or focused on myself to see?
Prayer
Father, I confess that I often try to accomplish through my own strength what only You can do. Bring me back to the cross today. Help me surrender my plans, desires, fears, and need for control to Jesus. Holy Spirit, give me eyes to see Your Kingdom and a heart that is sensitive to Your presence. Teach me to live from the new life You have given me. Amen.
