Wk 8 Day 3: Greater Is He

Scripture Reading

1 John 4:4
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Proverbs 3:5–6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.[a]

Romans 8:31–39
31
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[a]

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Reflection

One of the most encouraging promises in this passage is that believers do not have to fear deception because "the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." Our confidence is never in our intelligence or spiritual maturity—it is in Christ living within us through His Spirit.

Victory comes when we stop trusting ourselves and begin relying on Jesus.

Reflection Questions

  • Where am I relying on my own understanding instead of God?

  • What fears have been distracting me from trusting Christ?

  • How have I seen God's faithfulness in difficult situations?

  • What would it look like to trust Jesus more completely today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are greater than every fear, temptation, and lie. Teach me to depend on You instead of my own strength. Fill me with confidence, knowing that Your Spirit lives within me and will guide me into truth. Amen.

Wk 8 Day 2: Knowing the True Jesus

Scripture Reading

1 John 4:2–3
This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

John 1:1–14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Reflection

John teaches that every true message points people to the real Jesus—fully God and fully man. Throughout history many have created a version of Jesus that fits their own preferences, but only the Jesus revealed in Scripture has the power to save.

The better we know Jesus, the easier it becomes to recognize counterfeit versions of Him.

Reflection Questions

  • Am I pursuing a relationship with the Jesus revealed in Scripture?

  • Have I ever believed ideas about Jesus that weren't rooted in God's Word?

  • What does knowing the real Jesus change about my life?

  • How can I continue growing in my understanding of Christ?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for revealing Yourself through Your Word. Guard my heart from false ideas and help me know You more deeply. May my faith rest in who You truly are and not in a version of You created by culture or my own preferences. Amen.

Wk 8 Day 1: Don't Believe Every Voice

Scripture Reading

1 John 4:1–3

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

Acts 17:10–12

10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

Reflection

John begins chapter four with a wake-up call: not everything that claims to be spiritual actually comes from God. There are many voices competing for our attention—culture, media, social media, politics, influencers, religious teachers, and even our own emotions. John reminds believers that spiritual maturity is not believing everything; it is learning to test everything by the truth of Jesus Christ and God's Word.

Discernment isn't cynicism. It's wisdom rooted in love for God and His truth.

Reflection Questions

  • What voices most influence my thinking?

  • Do I spend more time listening to culture or Scripture?

  • When I hear a spiritual claim, do I automatically accept it or examine it?

  • How can I become more grounded in God's Word?

Prayer

Father, thank You for giving me Your Word and Your Holy Spirit. Help me become a discerning follower of Jesus. Give me wisdom to recognize truth and courage to reject anything that leads me away from Christ. Amen.

Wk 7 Day 5: Love Delayed Is Love Denied

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:21–24
21
Dear friends, if we don’t feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence. 22 And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.

23 And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us. 24 Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.

Galatians 6:9–10
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.

Reflection

John concludes by bringing everything into everyday life. Faith in Jesus and love for one another belong together. Genuine faith produces practical obedience.

The sermon ends with a powerful challenge: Who is the person you need to call? Forgive? Encourage? Serve? Help? Love delayed can become love denied.

Don't leave this week with only convicted feelings. Let God's love move you into action.

Reflection Questions

  • Who is God bringing to mind right now?

  • Is there someone I need to forgive or reconcile with?

  • What act of obedience have I been postponing?

  • How can I demonstrate Christ's love before this week ends?

Prayer

Lord, do not let me be a hearer of Your Word only. Show me who You are calling me to love and give me the courage to act. Help me live out my faith through practical obedience and genuine love. May others experience Your love through me this week. Amen.

Wk 7 Day 4: Setting Our Hearts at Rest

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:19–20
19
Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. 20 Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.

Romans 8:1
So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.

Reflection

After challenging us to love, John offers comfort for those who struggle with assurance. Some believers live under a constant sense of guilt and condemnation. They see their failures more clearly than God's grace.

John reminds us that God knows the whole story. He sees our weaknesses, but He also sees His Spirit at work within us. If you grieve over sin, desire to love others, and long to follow Christ, those are signs of God's grace in your life.

Reflection Questions

  • Do I tend to live under guilt and self-condemnation?

  • Am I trusting God's grace more than my feelings?

  • Where have I forgotten that God is greater than my heart?

  • What evidence of God's work can I thank Him for today?

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your grace is greater than my failures. When my heart condemns me, help me remember that You know me completely and love me fully. Teach me to rest in Your mercy and trust in Your promises. Amen.

Wk 7 Day 2: Cain or Christ?

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:15–16
15
Anyone who hates another brother or sister[a] is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.

16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.

Hebrews 11:4
It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.

Reflection

John places two examples before us: Cain and Christ. Cain's bitterness and jealousy led to destruction. Jesus' love led Him to lay down His life for others.

Most of us would never commit murder, but Jesus teaches us that hatred, resentment, bitterness, and contempt reveal deeper issues of the heart. John asks us to honestly examine whether we are becoming more like Cain or more like Christ.

Reflection Questions

  • Is there anyone toward whom I am holding bitterness or resentment?

  • Have I allowed hurt or disappointment to harden my heart?

  • How has Christ demonstrated sacrificial love toward me?

  • What would it look like to respond to difficult people the way Jesus responds to me?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for laying down Your life for me. Search my heart and reveal any bitterness, anger, or resentment that I have been carrying. Help me forgive as I have been forgiven and love as You have loved me. Amen.

Wk 7 Day 3: Love With Actions and Truth

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:17–18
17
If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister[a] in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

18 Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.

James 2:14–17
14
What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? 15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?

17 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.

Reflection

John refuses to let love remain an idea. Love moves. Love notices. Love gives. Love acts.

Christian love is more than saying, "I'll pray for you." It asks, "Lord, is there something You want me to do?" Sometimes the greatest acts of love are quiet, unseen, and inconvenient. Yet this is how God's love becomes visible in the world.

Today, ask God to show you a practical opportunity to love someone.

Reflection Questions

  • Who around me has a need I have noticed but not responded to?

  • Have I been offering words when God is calling me to action?

  • What act of kindness, generosity, or service can I offer this week?

  • How can I make God's love visible through my actions today?

Prayer

Father, help me move beyond good intentions. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me the courage to respond. Let Your love flow through my hands, my time, my resources, and my presence. Amen.

Wk 7 Day 1: The Evidence of New Life

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:11–14

11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain had been doing what was evil, and his brother had been doing what was righteous. 13 So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters,[a] if the world hates you.

14 If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers,[b] it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.

Reflection

John gives us a simple but searching test: if God has truly made us alive, love will begin to show up in our lives. Not perfect love. Not easy love. But real love. A heart transformed by Christ begins to turn outward toward God and toward others.

Today, reflect on the evidence of God's work in your life. Is your faith visible only on Sundays, or can people see the love of Christ flowing through your daily actions?

Reflection Questions

  • How has God's love changed the way I treat others?

  • Is my faith primarily expressed through religious activity or through genuine love?

  • Who in my life experiences the love of Christ through me?

  • Is there an area where my heart has become cold or indifferent toward others?

Prayer

Father, thank You for bringing me from death to life through Jesus Christ. Let Your love continue transforming my heart. Help me love others not merely in theory, but in practical ways that reflect Your character. Amen.

Wk 6 Day 5: The Family Resemblance

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:10
10
This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

John 13:34–35
34
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Reflection

John brings everything down to one practical question: Do we bear the family resemblance?

The evidence of belonging to God is not merely what we say. It is seen in how we live. God's love produces visible fruit: righteousness in our choices and love in the way we treat others.

This isn't meant to drive us to despair but to invite us into honest reflection. The same Father who adopted us is continuing His work within us.

Reflection Questions

  • When people observe my life, do they see evidence of God's work in me?

  • Do my words and actions reflect the character of my Heavenly Father?

  • How am I demonstrating love toward others?

  • What area of my life most needs to reflect Jesus more clearly?

Prayer

Father, thank You for making me part of Your family. Help me reflect Your character in the way I live, speak, and love others. May my life point people toward You and bear the unmistakable marks of someone who belongs to Jesus. Continue Your transforming work in me. Amen.

Wk 6 Day 4: Freedom From Sin's Power

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:4–9
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

Romans 6:12–14
12
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

Reflection

John reminds us why Jesus came: to take away our sins and destroy the works of the devil. Jesus did not come merely to make us feel better about our sin—He came to free us from its power.

This does not mean believers never struggle or stumble. John has already taught that Christians still need confession and grace. What changes is our direction. We can no longer be comfortable living in ongoing rebellion because God's Spirit lives within us.

Reflection Questions

  • Is there any area of unrepentant sin that I have become comfortable with?

  • What convictions has the Holy Spirit been bringing to my attention?

  • Am I fighting against sin or making peace with it?

  • How is God inviting me to greater freedom and obedience?

Prayer

Father, thank You that Jesus came to break the power of sin in my life. Search my heart and reveal anything that is keeping me from deeper fellowship with You. Give me the courage to repent, the strength to obey, and the grace to walk in freedom. Amen.

Wk 6 Day 3: Living in Hope

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:2–3
Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Colossians 3:1–4
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Reflection

John reminds us that God's work in us is not finished. One day we will see Jesus face to face and be fully transformed into His likeness. This hope is not wishful thinking—it is a certainty rooted in God's promises.

But this future hope is meant to change how we live today. We pursue holiness not because we are trying to earn God's love, but because we eagerly await the return of the One who loves us.

Reflection Questions

  • Do I regularly think about Christ's return?

  • How does my future hope shape my present priorities?

  • Is there an area of my life where God is calling me toward greater holiness?

  • What would it look like to live today with eternity in mind?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the hope of Your return. Help me keep my eyes fixed on You and not become consumed by temporary things. Continue transforming me into Your likeness and teach me to live each day in light of eternity. Amen.

Wk 6 Day 2: Living as a Child of God

Scripture Reading

1 John 3:1
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Romans 8:15–17
15
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Reflection

John pauses in amazement at the Father's love. God has not merely forgiven us—He has adopted us into His family. We are not strangers trying to earn access to God. We are sons and daughters welcomed by grace.

Many believers know this truth intellectually but still live with fear, insecurity, and anxiety. Today, allow your identity as God's beloved child to sink deeply into your heart.

Reflection Questions

  • Do I truly believe that I am loved by God?

  • Am I living from my identity as God's child or from my fears and insecurities?

  • How would my life change if I fully embraced God's love for me?

  • What burdens am I carrying that I need to bring to my Father today?

Prayer

Father, thank You for lavishing Your love upon me. Thank You that I am Your child and that I have access to You through Jesus Christ. Help me live with the confidence, peace, and security that comes from knowing I belong to You. Amen.

Wk 6 Day 1: Abide in Christ

Scripture Reading

1 John 2:28–29

28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

John 15:4–5

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Reflection

John's first encouragement is simple: Remain in Christ. Following Jesus is not merely a decision we made years ago. It is a daily relationship that must be cultivated and nurtured. Just as a healthy marriage requires ongoing attention, our relationship with Christ flourishes when we intentionally stay connected to Him.

The goal is not religious performance. The goal is intimacy.

Reflection Questions

  • How connected do I feel to Jesus right now?

  • Have I been intentionally cultivating my relationship with Him?

  • What distractions have been pulling me away from Christ?

  • What is one practical way I can spend more intentional time with Him this week?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for inviting me into a relationship with You. Forgive me for the ways I have drifted or become distracted. Help me remain close to You each day. Teach me to abide in Your presence and trust You as the source of my life, strength, and joy. Amen.

Wk 5 Day 4: Abide in Christ

Wk 5 Day 2: Discern the Counterfeit

John reminds believers that they have received an anointing from the Holy Spirit and therefore have access to discernment. The Holy Spirit guides us into truth and helps us recognize what is from God and what is not.

Wk 5 Day 1: Stay Anchored in the Truth

John lived with an urgency that every believer should embrace. Not fear, but readiness. He knew that deception would increase and that many voices would compete for people's attention. The danger wasn't merely persecution from outside the church—it was false teaching from within.
