Scripture Reading
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Reflection
John's warning is not about rejecting God's creation or withdrawing from people. It is about recognizing the subtle pull of a world system that constantly competes for our affection.
The greatest spiritual danger is not always blatant rebellion. Often it is misplaced affection. Good things become ultimate things. Comfort becomes compromise. Success becomes identity. Pleasure becomes an idol.
Ask God to reveal what has been competing for first place in your heart.
Reflection Questions
What am I most excited about, worried about, or consumed by right now?
What occupies my thoughts when I have unstructured time?
Is there anything I love more than my relationship with God?
Have I allowed a good gift to become an ultimate pursuit?
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that has become more important to me than You. Forgive me for the ways I have looked to the world for satisfaction, security, or identity. Draw my heart back to You and help me love You above all else. Amen.
