Scripture Reading

1 John 2:12–14

I am writing to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.

14 I write to you, dear children,
    because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

Reflection

Before John warns believers about the dangers of worldliness, he reminds them of their identity. You are not defined by your failures, your accomplishments, your struggles, or other people's opinions. You are forgiven. You know the Father. You belong to God.

The enemy often attacks our identity before he attacks our behavior. If he can make us forget who we are, he can influence what we pursue.

Today, begin by resting in what is already true about you because of Christ.

Reflection Questions

  • What voices have been shaping my identity lately?

  • Do I believe that I am truly forgiven and accepted by God?

  • What labels have I allowed to define me instead of God's Word?

  • How would my life change if I fully lived from my identity in Christ?

Prayer

Father, thank You that my identity is rooted in You and not in my performance. Remind me that I am forgiven, loved, and adopted into Your family. Help me begin each day from a place of security in Your love rather than striving for approval. Amen.
