Myanmar, also known as Burma, is currently facing a devastating and complex crisis marked by escalating violence and severe human rights abuses, including the intensification of attacks against Christians and other ethnic minorities by the military junta (Tatmadaw or Huna). This brutal crackdown, which includes air strikes and artillery assaults on Christian civilians, has been witnessed firsthand in regions like Eastern Burma.
The roots of the current conflict can be traced back to the military coup of 2021, when the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown. This event triggered widespread protests and led to everyday Burmese citizens joining forces with various long-standing ethnic rebel groups in what's known as the People's Defense Forces (PDF). They are now united in resisting the military rule.
For years, even before the recent coup, the Burmese army has been accused of committing atrocities against civilians, deliberately targeting churches and other religious sites. The people living in the remote mountain villages, many of whom live in basic bamboo huts without electricity or running water, are predominantly Christian. This strong Christian presence in the hill tribes dates back to the late 19th century, with conversions led by the first Baptist missionary, Aden Iram Judson. This historical religious difference is believed to be a significant factor in the ongoing conflict between these communities and the predominantly Buddhist military junta.
Eyewitness accounts reveal the extent of the targeted destruction. In Christian villages, numerous homes and churches have been burned and destroyed, and landmines have been found even on church property. Despite the widespread violence, the military often leaves Buddhist temples untouched, indicating a clear religious bias in their operations.
The ongoing conflict has forced thousands of people from their homes, creating a dire humanitarian situation. These displaced individuals often lack basic necessities and face constant danger.
Partnering with Hope Thailand: Bringing Aid and Support
In the face of this crisis, we recognize the urgent need to provide hope and care to those affected by the conflict in Myanmar. That's why we are proud to partner with ministries like Hope Thailand, an organization dedicated to bringing hope and care to the orphaned, underprivileged, and destitute refugee children of Thailand.
Hope Thailand was founded in 2009 in response to the overwhelming need for shelter and care for displaced Hill Tribe children and refugees along the Thai/Burma border. Their vision is to provide a safe and loving home-like setting for these vulnerable children. In cooperation with missionaries and local church leaders, Hope Thailand has established two homes (Bethel Home and Wang Pa Home) and four schools for refugee children.
These homes provide a haven for up to 40 children each, led by dedicated house parents. Through funding from individuals and churches, Hope Thailand ensures these children receive physical care (food, clothing, shelter, health and dental care) and spiritual nourishment within a Christian environment. Furthermore, the organization assists teenagers in pursuing their GED, enabling them to obtain a high school equivalent diploma.

The work of Hope Thailand is crucial because many of the refugees along the Thai-Myanmar border are from the Karen tribes, who have fled armed conflicts and severe human rights abuses and persecution by the Burmese military. Their villages have been destroyed, villagers tortured, women raped, and children orphaned and abused. These refugees often live in terrible conditions in refugee camps without a clear path to a better future. The children are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and malnutrition.
Through our partnership, we aim to support Hope Thailand's vital work in providing:
Safe homes and loving care for orphaned and displaced children.
Education for refugee children who would otherwise have no access to schooling.
Food, clothing, and basic medical supplies to displaced children and adults along the border.
A sense of family and belonging within a Christian environment.
By joining hands with Hope Thailand, we can extend a lifeline to those most affected by the crisis in Myanmar. We believe in their mission to bring hope to the hopeless and provide tangible support to vulnerable refugee children.
